Preparing for your first natural bodybuilding competition
Thinking about stepping on stage? Practical advice on timing, nutrition, posing and peak week.

Your first competition is a big step. Good preparation makes the experience safer, less stressful and much more enjoyable. Here are the basics.
Give yourself time
Most natural athletes need several months of dieting to reach stage condition — often 16 to 24 weeks or longer. Losing weight slowly, at roughly 0.5–1% of body weight per week, helps preserve muscle.
Prioritise protein and training
During a diet, a high protein intake helps protect muscle mass; research on natural bodybuilders suggests roughly 2.3–3.1 g of protein per kg of lean body mass. Keep training heavy and consistent — the goal is to lose fat while keeping the muscle you have built.
Practise posing early
Posing is a skill. Start practising the mandatory poses weeks before the show, ideally with a coach, and rehearse your routine until it feels natural. Good posing can make a real difference to the result.
Keep peak week simple
Extreme water and salt manipulation in the final days is risky and often backfires. Small, well-tested adjustments are safer. Natural athletes usually look their best when they arrive at the show well rested and fully prepared.
Know the rules
Read the competition regulations in advance: categories, registration deadlines, attire requirements and anti-doping rules. If anything is unclear, contact the organisers before the event.
