How natural athletes are tested

Drug testing is what makes natural bodybuilding natural. A short guide to how it usually works.

A natural competition is only as credible as its testing. That is why natural bodybuilding federations check athletes for prohibited substances before and during competitions.

What is prohibited

Many natural federations base their rules on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. It includes anabolic steroids, growth hormone, many hormone modulators, diuretics and a range of stimulants.

How testing works

  • Urine tests — the most common method; samples are analysed in a laboratory

  • Polygraph examinations — used by some natural federations as an additional check

  • Look-back periods — many federations require athletes to have been drug-free for a set number of years, or for life, before they can compete

Check your supplements

Some supplements sold online contain substances that are not listed on the label. Athletes are responsible for everything they take, so the safest choice is products from trusted manufacturers, with ingredients checked against the Prohibited List.

Athletes who plan to compete should read each event’s regulations carefully, including its anti-doping rules.
